Video poker

No-one really knows when poker was originally created but thanks to the invention of the computer chip we can surmise that video poker came into existence sometime back in the 1970’s. The actual term video poker refers to the many variations of the original poker game.

Video poker is however played against a machine and not other humans as poker is. It is a combination of slot machines and the normal five-card draw poker game.

Popular video poker games include:

  1. Aces and faces video poker: Extra high payouts made for aces or faces cards (that is Kings, Queens and Jacks) and there are no wild cards in the pack.
  2. Deuces and joker poker: Playing this poker is like having 5 jokers in one pack. All those cards with a value of two can stand in for any other card of any suit. The pack also has a 53rd card being an actual joker.
  3. Deuces wild poker: Here those cards with a value of two can stand in for any other card of any suit. There is no 53rd card and therefore is like having 4 jokers in your pack.
  4. Double joker poker: There are 54 cards in the pack, the two additional being jokers, which can stand in for any other card of any rank.
  5. Jacks or better video poker – the lowest standard poker hand that will pay out in this game is Jacks or better, a hand containing at least a pair of Jacks or more valuable.
  6. Joker poker: instead of the usual 52 cards in a pack, this game has 53, the last card being a joker and acts as a wild card. It can stand in for any other card of any suit.
  7. Tens or better video poker: this is the least valuable standard poker hand that will pay out.

The above are examples of some of the standard video poker games that can be found online.

There are a further two variations of Video Poker games aside from standard video poker – these are power poker games where you begin by playing four hands simultaneously. With progressive poker games, there are mainly two types - Supajax and Jackpot deuces.

Each game may have unique rules and payoffs, but all are played in a comparable manner and as stated before, based on the original poker game.
