Video poker strategies
General strategies in playing Video Poker games:
- Never keep a kicker with any pair. If you hold a kicker it reduces your return by five percent.
- Always rather draw three cards to a royal flush than drawing four cards.
- Don't break a flush even if you can draw one to a straight flush, but do break a flush to draw to a royal
- Always keep five-card winning hands with one exception: if you can, draw one card to a royal.
- With a four card draw, rather don’t keep a ten.
- If you happen to have a Jack or better card, never draw five.
- To draw a straight flush, never break a straight!
Each type of video poker game, be it standard video poker or its variants, or progressive video poker, but no matter which you are playing, they each have their own unique strategy. But let us take a look at deuces wild video poker’s strategy:
Deuces Wild Strategies
- It should go without saying you should always hold any 5 of a kind or royal flush.
- If you are dealt four two’s try and hold them.
- If you've got three two’s rather keep them.
- Hold any straight or five of a kind or royal flush.
- Hold any four of a kind.
- Hold any four of a royal flush.
- Otherwise hold onto the two’s and discard the rest of the cards.
- If you've only been dealt a single two, keep any made hand.
- Hold four card royal flushes over made straights, flushes and straight flushes.
- Keep four straight card flushes of all types.
- Hold three card royal flushes.
- Pairs: with two pair, keep one, but not both.
- Hold four card flushes.
- Hold four card straights.
- Hold three card straight flushes, including gaps.
- Hold four cards inside straights.
- Hang on to two card Queens or Jacks of high straight flushes.
- Discard two card royal flushes.
The above is an example of a strategy for just one of the relevant video poker games. Each game however has its own strategy and I think we could write a book if we were to state all the rules for each game. If you find a video poker game you prefer, I think it is a good idea to research it and find a strategy suited to it!
