Blackjack strategies
Winning at blackjack is in fact not only said to be a case of luck, but does involve a certain amount of both skill and practice. Get to know your rules and develop a strategy around these that work for you.
These are some basic points to keep close in mind when devising your strategy:
- Your aim is to get a point value higher than that of the dealer even if just one point higher and not as most people like to think – the closest number to 21. Forgetting this fact leads too many people to losing the game.
- The dealer has an added advantage as the player goes first. If you lose first you lose even if the dealer would go on to show a bust later in the game.
A good strategy to keep in mind for specific hand totals is as follows:
- Total of 5, 6, 7 or 8 – Always hit.
- Totals of 9 – Double down if the dealer shows a deuce through 6, otherwise hit.
- Totals of 10 – Double down if the dealer shows a deuce through to 9, otherwise you can hit.
- Totals of 11 – Always double down.
- Totals of 12 – Stand if the dealer shows a value of 4 though to 6.
- Totals of 13 through 16 – Stand if the dealer shows a deuce through 6.
- Totals of 17 through 20 – It is a good idea to always stand with these cards.
Some strategies for splitting:
- If the dealer has a face-up card of 4 to seven, then split your 2’s and 3’s
- It is not a good idea to split 4’s, 5’s and 10’s
- If a dealer has a face-up card of 3-6, split your 6’s
- If a dealer has a face-up card of 7 or less, then split your sevens
- Unless a dealer has a face-up card of 7 or 10 or an Ace then it’s a good idea to split your 9’s
Is these are just a couple of quick strategies with regards to blackjack; it would be advisable to get a book on the rules and strategies if you want to take this game up!
